EU EUAI Act — high-risk robotics
The EU Artificial Intelligence Act classifies many robotics and autonomous-system use cases as "high-risk," imposing conformity assessment, risk management, data governance, transparency and human-oversight obligations before market placement.

EU EUMachinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230
The core robot law in the EU. Requires CE marking, a Declaration of Conformity and a technical file before sale or putting into service. Still certifiable under Directive 2006/42/EC during the transition period. Harmonised safety standards EN ISO 10218-1/-2 and ISO/TS 15066 evidence conformity and safe human-robot collaboration.

EU EUMarket Surveillance Regulation (EU) 2019/1020
Article 4 requires an EU-established economic operator accountable for product compliance — meaning a manufacturer, importer or authorised representative inside the EU must hold responsibility for robots placed on the market.

EU EUDual-Use Regulation (EU) 2021/821
Export-control framework that can capture UGVs, quadrupeds and "military-adjacent" robots. Manufacturers must check classification before moving hardware across borders.

EU EUBatteries Regulation (EU) 2023/1542
Governs the large lithium packs used in robots — sustainability, labelling, carbon-footprint and end-of-life obligations. Works alongside WEEE (e-waste) and national packaging/transport rules (e.g. ADR for battery road transport).

EU EUGDPR — robot sensors & personal data
Directly relevant to robotics: robots carry cameras, LiDAR and microphones that capture identifiable people, triggering data-protection obligations around lawful basis, minimisation and transparency.

USA USAFAA Part 108 — drone BVLOS rule
Beyond-visual-line-of-sight rule for drones up to 1,320 lb MTOW, wingspan under 25 ft, ground speed up to 87 knots — replacing ad-hoc Part 107 waivers with two tiers: "Operating Permit" (lower-risk: small package delivery, ag monitoring, rural inspection) and "Operating Certificate" (higher-risk, requires a Safety Management System). NPRM reached OIRA final review Jul 10 2026; final rule expected late 2026 into 2027. [NEEDS VERIFICATION]

USA USASection 232 tariffs on drones & UAS components
Effective Sept 3 2026 (announced Aug 13 2026). 100% tariff (HTS 9903.08.21) on drones over 25 kg MTOW and units bundled with thermal-imaging payloads or docking stations; 25% tariff (HTS 9903.08.22) on standard sub-25 kg commercial/consumer drones. Reduced blended rates for preferred partners (15% EU/South Korea/Taiwan/Switzerland/Liechtenstein, 10% UK). Blue UAS / FCC-listed components get a 180-day grace period through Feb 9 2027. [NEEDS VERIFICATION — proclamation number unconfirmed]

USA USABIS drone export rule
Effective Aug 13 2026. Raised the UAV endurance threshold for national-security controls from 30 minutes to 3 hours and eased controls on lower-capability drones, streamlining US commercial drone exports.

China ChinaMOFCOM drone export controls
Effective Aug 5 2026. New licensing requirement on drone-related dual-use exports to the United States, part of broader trade countermeasures.
